Many aging adults experience changes to their daily routines. This can be due to health, limited range of motion, lack of energy, and more. As an occupational therapist and at Ease Living, I try to help folks find ways to continue their routines as much as possible with the work I do and the products we carry.
I have met so many people who shy away from baths or showers daily because they fear falling. And for good reason! Bathroom falls are so common and can be very dangerous. The combination of water, soap, steam, and limited physical abilities makes for a tricky time.
However, this doesn’t have to be the case. With some forethought and sturdy, well-designed products, slips and falls can be avoided and showers can resume. Here’s a few items that will make the shower or bath safer:
- Grab bars - These bars (when installed properly) give individuals something to grab on to if they are falling. They can also be used when getting in or out of the bathtub or on and off the commode to add stability. We stock a number of grab bars that are beautiful and functional, and even some that do double duty as towel racks or shower shelves. See them here.
- Bath seats - Both foldable and regular versions give users a safe place to sit during their shower. Foldable versions are easy to put away for others who may share the bathroom. At Ease Living, I have scoured the globe for the most beautiful, highest quality bath seats available.
- Bath mats/appliques - Rugs can cause falls on their own, so finding good, heavy duty mats for the floor and inside the tub is a priority. You can make the floor and inside of the tub less slippery, but be sure to do your homework and find quality versions to be sure they are a help rather than a hazard.
By taking a few steps and getting help in the right areas, your bathroom can be a safe space again. Don’t give up your independence if you don’t have to, we can help! Check our online store or send us a message. We’re happy to make recommendations for your situation.
